Closed for the Season, Warehouse District, New Orleans, LA (March 22, 2008, 9:05 am)

(Dan Pollack Photography) — Mon, 02 Nov 2026 16:56:19 GMT

]]>While walking through the Warehouse District of New Orleans on our way to the World War II Museum, we passed this scene between buildings. I did my best to press my camera lens up against the chain link fence, and hoped for the best.

Sometimes, things work out pretty well. This is the type of subject matter that (other than landscapes and wildlife) I could commit a lifetime of work to.

I see this as a beautiful scene: all of the textures, the colors and the mood of a bygone era.

Cave Sculpture, Valley of Fire State Park, NV

(Dan Pollack Photography) — Mon, 02 Nov 2026 16:56:21 GMT

]]>In the Valley of Fire, one of the finest sites to photograph can be easily passed by. After entering the main gate, the Atlatl campground, mounds of petrified sandstone is on the north side of the road. A loop road circles the rock formations, where petroglyphs and intricate sandstone caves can be found by the dozens. A famous interior arch known as sandstone arch recently eroded and collapsed, explaining why Sheryl and I could not locate it even with exact GPS coordinates. We did spend hours hiking up into alcoves and into the various caves and spent so much time that we nearly left ourselves short on time to see other destinations we had mapped out.

Arrival at White Pocket, Vermilion Cliffs National Wilderness Area, AZ (October 31, 2014, 11:42 am)

(Dan Pollack Photography) — Mon, 02 Nov 2026 16:55:57 GMT

]]>This was the second photo I took upon arriving at White Pocket, before we left the "parking" area. I knew it was going to be an awesome day since most often in this section of the southwest, clear blue skies dominate. Photographers pray for skies like this but they're comparatively rare.

The color version of this is a bit less dramatic, but the Silver Efex Pro software allows the maker of the image to view infinite interpretations of the scene using various tools, effects and filters.

The aim is to always bring back the equivalent of what I saw and felt - great advice from Ansel Adams. Often that's a departure from reality as in this case. Working in post-production software like Silver Efex Pro is a bit like uncovering the artist's sketch beneath an oil painting but in reverse. With the oil painting, the details of the original sketch were there all the time - it was up to artist to bring the sketch to life. With a photograph and this software tool, the original photo becomes the bare bones - the final image is what has been brought out as a final interpretation - or at least one version of it.

The Sky Dance

(Dan Pollack Photography) — Mon, 02 Nov 2026 16:56:18 GMT

]]>I must admit that I am fascinated with clouds and that, like I did as a child, I find real-world objects in their shapes. In this image, I saw these beautiful cirrus clouds directly overhead and framed a few fast compositions. In color, they're "nice" but the shapes in the clouds take on an entire different personality when viewed as a black and white image.

In this composition, I see a dancer. Graceful and fluid, the clouds look like the dancer is leaping forward while being pulled by a sail.

(I swear I wasn't drinking when I wrote this.)
