Mammatus Clouds at Sunset, St. Charles, IL
This sequence was taken over a span of about 10minutes on June 7, 2015 standing in my backyard. The day had been off-and-on stormy and late in the day, I had seen billowy clouds forming. As sunset approached, the sky first went golden, which drew my eye to the window. Sheryl turned and said, "better get your camera" and off I ran into the backyard, socks soon soaked from the afternoon rains.
I can count on one hand the number of sunsets I've seen that compare in northern Illinois. But every now and then, after a storm, we're treated to sunsets that are regular nightly appearances out west. In this case, mammatus clouds formed and were beautifully lit by the setting sun.
