In the Valley of Fire, one of the finest sites to photograph can be easily passed by. After entering the main gate, the Atlatl campground, mounds of petrified sandstone is on the north side of the road. A loop road circles the rock formations, where petroglyphs and intricate sandstone caves can be found by the dozens. A famous interior arch known as sandstone arch recently eroded and collapsed, explaining why Sheryl and I could not locate it even with exact GPS coordinates. We did spend hours hiking up into alcoves and into the various caves and spent so much time that we nearly left ourselves short on time to see other destinations we had mapped out.
