Ancient Petroglyph, Valley of Fire State Park, NV (October 28, 2014, 3:15 pm)

In Valley of Fire, petroglyphs are abundant and it seems that with each one you spot, you find dozens more. We would have walked right past a major panel, where the petroglyphs number in the hundreds. There are so many, in fact, that they're almost too obvious to notice.

The lighting even at midday is canyon lighting, so light bounces off of nearby canyon walls providing for great detail in the sandstone cliffs. I like the nuances in this particular image, the main figure surrounded by several lesser petroglyphs. These are etched into the sandstone using sharp picks that chisel or peck away the sandstone.
