Red Fox, Hunting, Grand Teton National Park, WY (May 15, 2013, 12:02pm)

A malnourished female red fox trying to turn odds in her favor as she spots a vole or mouse in the brush at Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

For me, this photo represents personal tenacity as a photographer. We spotted this fox near the south entrance to Grand Teton. At first, the fox kept moving further and further away and we did not want to chase into the deep brush to follow. By chance, we found a road further south that looked to double back. Taking that we drove back and forth several times, convinced that we had missed any chance of seeing it. One last drive through where we thought it had gone and we spotted it, 20 feet from the road, hunting something that was scurrying through the grass. Then, as foxes do, she pounced onto her prey for a well-deserved meal. She later retired to a shady spot, offering additional opportunity to photograph her at rest. Patience paid off and we enjoyed a rare viewing opportunity of this shy animal.
