Light Shaft on Fountain, San Antonio, TX (February 17, 2016, 10:30 am)

This is one of only two images on my website taken with my cell phone's built-in camera.

On our last morning in San Antonio, 2 hours before needing to be at the airport, we took a hasty self-guided tour of the Alamo. Adjacent to the main structure is a glorious courtyard with grand live oaks and this beautiful fountain. To our eyes, we did not see this sun streak strongly, just the high sun overhead. I took the first exposure, not expecting anything fantastic, when I saw this image appear on the phone's screen. I took another for good measure and this has become a favorite scene from our trip.

I have long held that the essence of a photo is far more important than the hardware used to take it. There's more value to me in a fascinating scene that suffers a little from technical precision than a scene that is technically impeccable but overall emotionless.

For me, this image perfectly captured this moment.
