Fallen Limb and Ice Pools, Dancing Trees, Door County, WI (January 24, 2016, 9:53 am)
On a photographic workshop in Door County with Dan Anderson and Suzanne Rose, the group ventured into the woods of Ellison Bay to a spot known as the Dancing Trees. With a higher than normal water level, the twisted trunks of the trees remained a couple of feet below the ice level in this photo. But the sheets of ice that heave as a result of moving water beneath the surface creates quiet drama nevertheless. We had "pre-visited" this site the evening before and it had half the drama as it did the following morning when this photo was made.
The fallen limb leads the eyes into this quiet scene. Setting up for this shot, a couple of our group fell through the shallow ice - only a foot or so - and that added a hint of challenge to our efforts.
