Sheryl, Schulman Grove, Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, Inyo National Forest, Owens Valley, CA (2007)
At 11,300' of elevation, the air is noticeably thin in this section of the Inyo mountains. The winds whip ice cold air relentlessly, making for a very chilly experience. We had multiple layers, full Gore-Tex outerwear, etc. and were still frozen in a matter of 30 minutes. But we saw the oldest living things on earth, the bristlecone pines, that date to more than 4,000 years old. Hard to comprehend!
