Spiral Icicles II, Weborg Dock, Gills Rock, Door County, WI (January 22, 2016, 12:43pm)
I had seen many winter ice photos from Gills Rock in Door County, Wisconsin, but had my first chance to photograph them in January of 2016. I was hopeful that the weather would cooperate - as of 3 weeks prior, temperatures hovered at a balmy 40 degrees and the peninsula had received little snow for the season to that point.
Without adequate preparation, the ice photos at Weborg Dock would not have been possible. A thick coating of ice covered the dock and everything surrounding, making it absolutely essential to wear ice crampons to walk without breaking my neck. From out in the bay, these icicles formed on the west side of the dock, the wind whipping them into spirals as they thawed and refroze.
