Desert Tarantula, Valley of Fire State Park, NV (October 28, 2014, 5:27pm)

This male tarantula was crossing the main highway at dusk that runs through the Valley of Fire. We could see it about 75 yards away. We stopped to ensure that a visitor exiting the park would not end its quest for a mate or a bite to eat. These are profoundly more terrifying in a pet shop aquarium than in real life...

Something like this in my house? I'd have a shovel in one hand a heavy-duty wet dry vac in the other. In the wild, however, this creature makes perfect sense and is truly awesome.
