Bull Moose, Yellowstone National Park, WY (September 29, 2002, 8:54am)

What I remember most about this image had more to do with the respect for wildlife than anything photographic in nature. We stopped for an "animal jam" in Yellowstone - an instant parking lot formed along an arterial road in the park whenever a significant animal such as this bull moose is spotted. By the time we arrived, I'd estimate that 50 people had gathered and each was moving in as closely as they could, with small cameras, to take a photo.

But the moose was getting agitated and at one point, broke into a trot, circled away from the crowd, then doubled back and charged. People screamed and an experienced photographer that had been on the scene warned people to stop running and to back off considerably to give the moose space. Good advice.

First, moose are enormous. They look docile and slow, but they are neither. That day, many people got to see the true nature of this animal when they are crowded and harassed.

Ehh, not the best photo, but I promised that many of these were very memorable for the experiences we've had, not necessarily for their photographic achievement.
