An unusual sequence of weather events - a very heavy snow, quick thaw followed by extreme cold with high winds - produced frozen waves of ice across
northern Illinois. I passed this way each day, but could not find a safe place to park my vehicle along this rural highway.
Finally, enough snow clearing had been done to allow for safe passage. As I stood photographing this scene, large sheets of ice began to heave and the ground quaked under the massive weight on the frozen fields.
