Lawn Ice, Kane County, IL (March 25, 2016, 7:45 am)
Leaving for work one morning, I noticed this scene as I reached the end of my driveway. Heavy rains that had pooled in the culvert in from heavy rains the day before had flash frozen overnight in a late spring freeze.
The result was a stretch of ice crystal patterns in the lawn that stretched for 20 feet. I grabbed my camera and took a number of exposures, each a completely different set of patterns from the one before.
Within an hour, when Sheryl went to see these, the sun had caused this natural crystal masterpiece to vanish. Fleeting moments that I was glad to have noticed.
