Black Rock and Reflections, The Virgin River, Zion National Park, UT (April 26, 2005, 10:59 am)
This is another image that looks bland and uninspiring in its native color form. The Virgin River is a muddy, brown torrent of water in spring. This puddle is very brown and lacks any contrast. But I knew that I saw something in the composition and as a black and white image, that becomes more evident.
The rock in the center jutting up is also a brown tone, but I have darkened it in Photoshop to provide some low-end contrast to the scene. Although it appears as though this black is sitting upon a gray triangle, the triangle is actually a perfectly still reflection of the canyon walls of the Virgin Narrows.
Even though I know exactly what's what in the image, it still causes me to stop and stare. That's what I love most about it. And in that way, it reminds me a little of a Brett Weston image.
